TAMARIND
Scientific name: Tamarindus indica.
Occurrence
Cultivated in the Northeast Region of Brazil.
Harvest Period
From September to December.
History
Even though it is also known as “Indian Date”, the origin of tamarind is from the African savannahs. Tamarind was introduced by the Arabian in Europe through the Iberic peninsula and by the Portuguese in Brazil with seeds brought from India.
Its identification with India is due to the fact that it was largely cultivated in India, and exported to Europe and America. In India, the plant stock has been genetically improved, resulting in a superior quality fruit.
Curiosities
Even though we know tamarind as a fruit, it is classified as a vegetable because it is a pod seed.
Due to its capacity to stimulate intestine functions, tamarind became to be known as an excellent laxative.
