SOUR SOP
Scientific name: Anona muricata.
Occurrence
In the Amazon, Northeast and in the Savannah regions of Brazil.
Harvest Period
From March to May (top) and from September to November.
History
The Sour sop is derived from Central America, but is also cultivated in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Hawaii, and some regions of Africa and Asia.
With an average weight between 1 and 4 kg, the fruits of the Sour sop tree must be picked before completely ripe; due to its weight, they normally fall down from the tree, which makes them useless.
The Northeast region of Brazil is where the fruit has the highest consumption, the North region being the most favorable area for the cultivation of the fruit. Although it is a tropical fruit, the Sour sop can also be grown in subtropical climates.
Curiosities
The Sour sop is considered a great ally in the treatment of over twelve different kinds of cancer. It is also used to treat rheumatism and inflammations.
Although the most common way of consuming Sour sop is as juice, in some regions it is consumed unripe as a vegetable, being cooked, baked or fried.
